We We depart from Chalkida at 6:00 am in the morning towards the port of Piraeus, where we board the boat to the island of Agios Nektarios on Aegina. One of the first sights you will see in the port is the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos, a small, white, simple building. It is one of the oldest temples on the island. Here we visit the monastery of Agios Nektarios. Undoubtedly one of the top attractions on the island. This particular monastery is considered miraculous, since Saint Nektarios (1846–1920) is a modern saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church, who is believed to have performed miracles during his lifetime. We continue our visit to the Temple of Aphaia, an architectural jewel from the 5th century BC. dedicated to the goddess Athena. It is even believed that it served as a model temple for the architects of the Parthenon, Iktinos and Kallikrates. We then drive to a traditional fishing village on the south side of the island in Perdika, where we enjoy our lunch (the area is famous for its Ouzo Mezedes) and head to the port, where we have time to try local sweets or enjoy our walk.
